Detective novel meets entertaining comedy in Peter Ackroyd’s century-hopping investigation into the mysterious death of Thomas Chatterton.

“One of those rare literary experiments that begins almost too clever for its own good and in the end not only justifies its cleverness but transcends it.”  –  San Francisco Chronicle

When Thomas Chatterton, a brilliant literary counterfeiter, is found dead in 1770, the mysterious circumstances surrounding his death are unravelled in succeeding centuries. What is the mystery of Thomas Chatterton, the enigmatic 18th-century poet-forger and genius, whose life ended under shadowy circumstances? A young poet and an elderly female novelist try to decode the clues found within an ancient manuscript, only to discover that their investigation is disclosing other hidden secrets… Chatterton is at once a hilariously witty comedy; a thoughtful and dramatic exploration of the deepest issues of authenticity in both life and art; and a subtle and touching story of failed lives, parental love, doomed marriages, and erotic passions.

“Ingenious… A wildly inventive series of literary allusions. Chatterton’s wit is as…dizzily self-aware as the modern art world it wickedly mocks.”  -  The New Republic

Peter Ackroyd is unusual in being equally feted as a novelist and biographer. Ackroyd’s novels and biographies are closely entwined, the non-fiction providing the background for novels such as Hawksmoor and Chatterton. London has been a leitmotif in his work – his lives of William Blake, Dickens and Shakespeare, for example, and was made explicit in London: a Biography and The Thames.
